Abstract: For most of the Indian rural poor households, savings are inadequate to finance farming and other economic activities. This, together with the differences between income and expenditure and lack of fixed capital investment of the rural poor, makes availability of timely credit at affordable rates of interest an essential pre-requisite for improving rural livelihoods and accelerating rural development. This paper presents a case study of credit transactions in Nurpur, a village located in the remote area of Alipurduar sub-division in Northern West Bengal, with a purpose to review the existing status of rural credit system in a village in West Bengal and identify the areas of policy reforms for strengthening rural credit delivery mechanisms.
