Abstract: The district of Midnapore was always prone to cyclonic storms owing to its location at the northwest angle of the Bay of Bengal. However, it was in 1864 that the intensity of the storm and the height of the storm-wave were extremely high. The article not only exposes the dreadful distress of the people during the disaster but also draws to our attention, the apathy and indifference of the colonial government towards the survivors.
