This paper tries to explore transformation of Calcutta’s urban space in a period of transition, i.e. from end phase of colonial rule to early years of decolonization. The main object of this paper is to understand the role of broader politico-economic events like world war, famine, communal riots and migration in determining urban planning and development. At the same time, we would review how concerns of health and hygiene affected planning and developmental works in an urban area. Simultaneously, we would try to identify elements of colonial influence in the area of urban planning and development even in post-independent phase.en_US
